Satisfying stories are formulaic, not because Hollywood has a formula but because all of our imaginations are more similar than they are different. It’s the mechanism we use to create dreams….. then try to find meaning in them. The language of the soul has a grammar, and even if you haven’t tried to define it, this grammar still operates within you. If you want to connect with an audience you will engage those principles while creating and editing (it’s what would make your edit satisfying), and you’ll do so consciously or not. And I will certainly unwittingly use them while watching.
My advice isn’t to rebel against formula. Instead rebel against people who make insincere work, who don’t CARE deeply and personally and joyously about what they’re making.
